The accurate detection and compensation for the effect of cross winds is the holy grail of sniper scope development. A patent awarded two days ago to the Israeli Government's Soreq Nuclear Research Center describes a system that can do just that.

The patent describes a LIDAR (Laser Identification Detection And Ranging) unit which works by firing a laser beam at the target. The reflection of the laser is captured by an array of photodiodes. Fluctuations in the signals received by the photodiodes are used to detect both the direction and velocity of cross wind. The system works for targets which are at least 500m away.
Highly sophisticated hunting rifle scopes, for example the Burris Eliminator LaserScope, already incorporate technology that can adjust their aiming point by measuring the target's range using a rangefinder. If this technology was combined with the Israeli LIDAR system it would take most of the guess work out of long range sniper.

Das wäre natürlich extremst hilfreich, grade jetzt, wo die Scharfschützengewehre schon auf Distanzen gehen, wo man solche Effekte nur noch schwierig abschätzen kann.

Rein theoretisch ist er das schon längst. Ist nur eine Frage des Geldes.

ich meine das im endeffekt noch ein mensch den abzug drückt und letztendlich die entscheidung über leben und tod trifft - und wenns nur ein knopferl ist dass er irgenwo drückt. diese entscheidung sollte man niemals maschinen überlassen!

Stimmt. Ich geh mal davon aus, dass es in den USA längst ähnliche Projekte, aber natürlich unter Verschluss, gibt.

Die F117 hat man auch nicht gekannt, bis sie mal plötzlich "da" war.

War nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis die LIDAR Technik klein genug für ein tragbares System geworden ist.
Auf einem ähnlichen Prizip beruhen recht neue Sensoren für Flugzeuge, die bei Start und Landung Scherwinde erkennen können, und dadurch eine Warnung auslösen.

Als nächstes montieren wir das dann auf einen kleinen fahrbaren Roboter samt dem Gewehr, und beim Auswahlverfahren zum Sniperkurs bekommt jeder einen PS3 Controller in die Hand gedrückt, und muss um sein Leben zocken...
Ich wär unschlagbar...*gg*
